A daring case of the theft of an elephant is pending before the Magistrate of Malda.

A man from Oudh recently came to the area and stayed for a week at the elephant lines of the Chowdhury Zamindars.

At midnight on 22 July it is alleged that he stole a female elephant and left the lines. Avoiding the known routes he reached Kaliachawk on the banks of the Ganges and there told people that the elephant belonged to the Nawab of Murshidabad and that he was going to bring the District Magistrate, who was at Rajmahal, and by this he secured every help from the local people and police.

Meanwhile, the theft was brought to the notice of the police in Zemindar and Malda and the manhunt began following the footprints of the elephant and traced them as the thief was crossing the Ganges. The elephant and the thief were produced in court and the case was adjourned pending further enquiry into the antecedents of the accused.
