Pontefract man Thomas Hepworth was sentenced to one month’s hard labour for stealing a cabbage.

He took the vegetable, valued at one Penny, from a garden in Halfpenny Lane after a night of drinking in the Yorkshire town.

The case was later taken to the then Home Secretary Winston Churchill but the future Prime Minister refused to interfere and let the sentence stand.
